Director – Enterprise Development – New York City, New York

The primary purpose of this position is to manage a team of enterprise developers across all regions and participate directly in the development of supply chain, distribution and training center social for-profit enterprises including managing the process of feasibility analysis including market assessments, business case development, financial analysis and social return analysis.

The incumbent will also be responsible for providing interim program management in country, as required, and supporting and advising in-country teams ultimately hired to operate the enterprise for which this enterprise development team was involved in the creation. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to distributing workload among enterprise developers; coaching enterprise developers in best practices; developing tools and systems to create an efficient enterprise development process; analyzing potential enterprise investment opportunities; conducting market, financial, operational and value chain analysis to support business cases; providing key inputs required for Investment analysis and beneficiary impact analysis; developing specialized geographic knowledge, and sector knowledge as required; making independent judgments regarding value chain and process optimization; providing ongoing analytical and implementation support to Enterprise management teams post business creation; supervising other enterprise developers and development tasks as assigned; and transferring learning and best practices between all Enterprise developers.

In order to conduct the analysis and develop recommendations, the incumbent will work closely with CGEP management and colleagues in the US and abroad, as well as represent the Foundation to external stakeholders. The impact of the work the incumbent will perform is likely to be significant as CGEP launches new enterprises in country. The person will represent the Foundation by interacting regularly with external stakeholders and business leaders in country.

Responsibilities:

Assess enterprise design in existing and new markets and countries; develops recommendations and business plans for potential supply chain, distribution or training center enterprises with a defined strategy and clear operational plans for execution, including technical/subject matter expertise requirements and overall resource needs.

Independently develop and assess enterprise potential in order to validate the following for each type of enterprise under development consideration:

for Supply Chain Enterprises a) prospective market buyers and demand analysis, b) prospective supplier analysis and gaps in producer preparedness, c) producer and supplier adoption rates, d) recommended scope of agro extension services and impact on yield and productivity, e) analysis of internal vs. contracted agricultural support services and f) value chain analysis including role of intermediaries.

for Distribution Enterprises a) identification of last mile distribution opportunities, b) assessment of competitive product offerings and prices in remote areas, c) availability of female entrepreneurs in targeted regions, d) cultural willingness for neighborhood women to participate in distribution network, e) identification of relevant products and cultivation of local and global supplier relationships, f) optimal locations for advanced stocking locations, and g) potential logistics solutions.

for Training Center Enterprises a) identification of low-skilled labor market opportunities in tourist enclaves and other growing sectors, b) quantification of labor growth requirements, c) identification and coordination of specifications of local employers for labor preparedness, d) establishment of common training standards among regional employers, e) assessment of potential student population’s contribution to tuition, f) assessment of third party funding of scholarships, g) determination of curriculum development requirements and qualified local operators.

All of the above models also require full assessment of implementation risks and market risks.

Works collaboratively with Enterprise Investment team to provide inputs to valuation models based on analysis conducted and recommends sensitivity analysis necessary to assess parameters of financial risk.

Manages Enterprise Development Team including work priorities, work streams, reviews business case development, provides technical guidance to all team activities, counsels developers in best practices, supervises developers work plans, assesses work quality prior to submission to senior management, addresses developer productivity and motivation, reviews developers’ work and performance.

Supports Enterprise general managers in post launch matter including assessment of new value chain opportunities, business expansion and reconciliation between development plans and operational plans.

  • Other responsibilities, tasks and assignments requested by CGEP Management.
  • Must be able and willing to travel internationally.

Qualifications:

  • MBA or equivalent advanced degree required.
  • A minimum of 7 years business management and/or business consulting experience particularly related to creation, structuring or restructuring of enterprises in multinational settings.
  • Experience working with development of supply chains preferred, but not required. Three plus years experience managing a team of professionals preferably cross border.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Knowledge of supply chain and logistics preferred.
  • Knowledge of agricultural, tourism and/or direct sales sectors helpful.
  • Must be able to work independently and exercise exemplary judgment while representing the Foundation with potential in country stakeholders.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills are required, financial statement analysis, a broad range of computer skills (database, spreadsheet and statistics applications); strong project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Must be willing to consider short or long-term assignments in country.

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Frequent computer work, which may require repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
  • Occasional lifting, bending, pulling, collating, and filing, some of which could be heavy (>15 lbs) or require the use of carts.
  • Frequent long-distance travel in excess of 20 hours flight time which may require walking distances, lifting and carrying luggage and boxes and prolonged periods of sitting in tight quarters; occasional site visits to remote areas with poor travel and living conditions.

This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer, Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership.
